Synopsis

There can be many varying definitions and explanations of what E-Learning is. Personally Queensland government have best describes e-Learning, according to the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (2008, p. 1) “the strategy is about engaging the digital generation, improving individualised learning opportunities, sparking innovation in learning, enhancing teachers’ digital pedagogy and getting the best from schools’ ICT investment.” New and improved technologies are overtaking some of the old ways of completing school work, just one example, instead of using textbooks students are being introduced into the laptop program. If students are not being exposed to technology when they are in the younger grades they will struggle with what they are expected to complete in the higher grades. Agreed by Clarke (2004) there are many benefits from using e-Learning in the classroom, such as group work and to cater for students with different learning styles. Some important topics that will be discussed in detail are, working legally, safely and ethically, collaborative construction of knowledge and the importance of pedagogy.

Involving students in creating and utilising online technology is a wonderful approach to teaching. When allowing students access to technology it is extremely important for teachers to be aware of the risks. Some of the risks include being aware of copyright/intellectual property infringements, information sharing under child protection act 1999 procedure, the risk of compromise of privacy, making sure all students have consent from parents and being aware of what information is being put up in relation to the school. Schools need to implement a procedure and guideline for using the web along with developing and implementing “policies and procedures for the removal or replacement of inappropriately published material” (Department of Education Training and Employment, 2012, p. 1).

I have been looking at many different technologies that can help to assist when teaching technology in the classroom. I have never been a very tech savvy person, but while using different types of technologies I have been surprised with how easy they were to use and incorporate into the classroom. Within teaching technology there are learning theories that can be used to help explain why it is so important; such as constructivist, and connectivism. Fosnot agrees the constructivist theory was launched into action by Jean Piaget around 60 odd years ago and has grown from there. Constructivist approach is not particularly a theory of teaching but an approach to instruction that is now used in most schools. A constructivist view to learning is where teachers can take a step back and allow students to explore their own ideas, contextualised and meaningful experiences; students can raise their own questions, construct their own points of view and search for patterns (1996). According to Fosnot, (1996, p. ix) “the classroom in this model is seen as a minisociety, a community of learners engaged in activity, disclosure, and reflection.” One of the technologies that I have discovered is a collaborative group wiki. Incorporating a collaborative wiki into the classroom would involve the use of the constructivist approach. Students would be partially working independently on searching for their own ideas and views on a certain topic. As shown in the following link http://emilysblogspot15.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/de-bonos-six-hats.html. More detail on this can be found in the next paragraph. Connectivism is a relatively new approach that has been introduced with digital technologies. This approach foregrounds (Ravenscroft, 2011, p. 1) “...the role of network technologies, the connections within these networks, and how these influence an evolving and relative perspective on knowledge.” Recently it has been noted that one of the most important aspects of connectivism is dialog. Without dialog it is hard for students to stay connected with one another. An example of this could be to use a classroom blog. I am going to go into more detail about how I would use these digital tools in the following paragraph. Here is the link to my blog which relates to how students could connect with one another online http://emilysblogspot15.blogspot.com.au/.

Pedagogy, is how to teach; your own personal teaching philosophy. I am going to give you an insight to what my personal philosophy would look like. When I graduate university my preference would be to teach kindergarten. Children in a kindergarten context are becoming tech savvy and are able to use the basic technologies. To help promote technology I would create a class wiki that can be accessed by the whole class. On this wiki I would keep information about what we do in our class, such as what the childrens focus is for the week. If we were working on a particular topic such as shapes, I would have simple pictures of the different types of shapes that can be found, such as square, rectangle and circle. I would then allow students to take out the classroom camera so they can take pictures of objects that are shaped the same as the shapes we are looking at. As a class we would be able to put the images into our wiki. This process would allow the students to explore and experiment with technology as well as how technology can be used in everyday life; students are coming up with their own ideas and questions that they have. Connectivism would be used with in my kindergarten setting, as discussed above I would use a classroom blog. This would be an area where all information surrounding the classroom can be found. There would be links to all different types of online technologies that have been used, such as links to digital tools that could show film of what the students have created, or a voice over of a song. The students can help to create the blog and upload and record any information. Another framework that helps to influence my teaching of technology is the TPACK framework. Koehler agrees the TPACK framework is a complex interplay of three different forms of knowledge; content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and technology knowledge. These three forms of knowledge should be intertwined with one another when teaching students about technology. This would create four more areas of knowledge pedagogical content knowledge, technological pedagogical knowledge, technological content knowledge and technological pedagogical content knowledge. Being aware of each area will help to assist teachers when they are planning to teach technology. The TPACK framework has helped me to clarify how to organise my thinking and my decision making when it comes time for me to use technology in the classroom. It is evident that as a teacher I will need to have a clear idea of why and how I am going to be using technology (2011).

ZooBurst and Digital Timeline

This week we were asked to create and play with more than one online tool. I decided to use ZooBurst and Digital Timelines. My decision to use these two technologies was because I have never heard of them before and wanted to explore them.

The first technology I looked at was the digital timeline. This technology was very simple to use, it was all about playing around with the site to see what could be done. With my timeline I found that you can add in images, videos and links to other sites. With my timeline I added in a link to my website that I created.

The second tool I looked at was ZooBurst. I has never heard of this site so I did not know what I was going to be creating. When I logged in I realised that this site was for teacher, mothers, students or anyone to create an online book. Not only is this for an online book They can create a book surrounding any topic and make it interactive with the students, images can be added as well as videos. For my book I made one that would work in with a Kindergarten setting. The topic is shapes and shows some of the simple shapes with the question what shape is this, then on the next page it shows the word to go with the shape. This could be used to teach students about shapes, numbers, animals and all different types of subjects. Students could also be asked to create their own pop up books on a topic of their choice. The ideas are endless.

Glogster, PowerPoint & Prei

Here is my link to the prezi I have created. I have shared my thoughts on the actual prezi. http://prezi.com/3l47kxg1f4xb/present/?auth_key=kji8cp1&follow=-g9xc3qpuprs&kw=present-3l47kxg1f4xb&rc=ref-48103577

This is the link to my glogster and again I have shared my thoughts on the glogster. http://www.glogster.com/elang1993/managing-e-learning/g-6kjjeblma0v002st3vhm7a0

The third technology that I worked with was PowerPoint. I have used PowerPoint many times for numerous assessment tasks and to create resources for my teaching pracs. One thing I have never done is added in a voice over or some music. I took this opportunity to do so. I created a slide that could be used in a Kindergarten setting to help teach students about colours. I have only created on slide, if I was going to use this in a classroom I would create numerous slides that show more colours then just prime colours. I found PowerPoint easy to navigate through, I believe that is because I am very familiar with this technology. What I have created is just a short snip-it of what could be used in a classroom. Slides could be created for students to interact with and they can be used for all subject areas. Also students could use PowerPoint on the interactive whiteboard so they are physically getting involved with their own learning. There are many options that are available for teachers and students.

I have attached my PowerPoint to my Weebly the address is: http://emilyhasaweebly.weebly.com/

Image, Video and Audio

This week we have been asked to look at three different technologies. They are looking at an image and using the correct program to re-size the image. We have also been asked to look into creating an audible podcast. The last technology we have been asked to experiment with is a video.

The first technology that I have tried and tested is mobaphoto. With this technology it allows you to choose an image from your personal files or you can choose an image from the internet. I chose one of my personal images. From this I then selected to re-size, which does not mean the actual image, I am re-sizing the megabites that are in the image so it can then fit into a smaller area, for example a small usb. I found this a little bit difficult to use, but I then went and looked through the technical manual and followed the steps. I think that this technology could come in use when teaching, it would be used to teach students how to re-size images to fit them into a smaller context.

Hey this is my very first voice recording that I have done. I found it really easy to do. I also think that this could be used in the classroom. Students could be given separate tasks and instead of having the teacher to explain the task they could have the voice recording so the students can flick through themselves. Students could also create their own voice recording to go with an assessment piece.

I have also created a short video clip. I have just used my laptop and used the webcam to take a short video of my backyard. This is the first time I have ever used my webcam as a video recorder. It was very easy and simple to use. I can see how teachers could incorporate this into their lessons. Teachers could create video clips of examples to show the students or even get the students to create their own video that would match in with assessment pieces.

Exploring with a Wiki, Blog & Website!

Hello Everyone.

This week for our reflection we have been asked to create our own wiki's and websites. The two programs that I used to create my online tools were wikispaces and weebly. In my wiki and website I have wrote down my thoughts on the programs and what I liked about them, here are the links.

Wikispaces: http://emilylangleyhasawiki.wikispaces.com/home

Weebly: http://emilyhasaweebly.weebly.com/

The other thing we were asked to talk about was our blog and how we are finding it. So far I have found the blog very easy to navigate through. All of the settings are easy to change, it is quite simple to add in a picture or a youtube clip, as I have done a few in my previous posts. I believe that using a blog in a school setting would be quite easy to do, the children would be able to navigate through the blog themselves. The students could discuss what they have learnt throughout the term and how they view that learning experience. Anything could be created with the blog it is up to the teacher and what they see would work for their classroom. Also as teachers are now being asked to add more ICT's into the classroom, something very easy and simple to use could be a blog. The blog could be related around a learning topic that is going on in the classroom. As I personally want to teach kindergarten I would use a blog to bring up some simple objects for the students to learn about. Maybe put it on the interactive whiteboard so when the students click on each shape it could take them to an online activity that is related to the shape. I would also do a similar things with numbers.

De Bono's Six Thinking Hats

This week we have been asked to participate in an online activity. The activity asked us a question "What do we think about mobile phones in the classroom?" From this question we were then asked to write our answers in a collaborative wiki. But before we could answer this question we were asked to think about our answer from different perspectives. To help us think from different perspectives we used De Bono's six thinking hats. There are six thinking hats and all of the hats have a different meaning and colour. De Bono's thinking hats are often used in the classroom to get students thinking outside the box or from another perspective. De Bono's hats are not just a tool to be used with children they can be used with adults, which was shown in this activity. I personally found that from using De Bono's six thinking hats it makes you look at the question from many different perspectives, not just your own. I decided to go with my first preference which was the green hat. The green hat makes you look at the question in a creative way. I then decided to choose the white hat, which makes you look at all of the facts around the question. From doing this I got the opportunity to look at two different sides of the question.

By putting our ideas and thoughts onto a collaborative wiki it allowed all of us students to see not only one opinion but many different opinions. I think this was a great idea as again it opens your mind up to many different perspectives and allows you to read some ideas that maybe you wouldn't have thought of yourself. As someone who has never used a wiki before, I found it very easy to navigate and to put in my thoughts on the question. I believe that social constructivism links in with De Bono's thinking hats. Social constructivism relates to students being able to interact with one another to help them through their learning journey. It also relates to the teacher being supportive and scaffolding lessons so that students can get the support they need. Believe it or not there is also some theory behind the use of a wiki. The two theories that I believe stand out are constructivism and connectivism. I have already spoke about how constructivism is when people are able to collaboratively work together, but this only works if there had been scaffolding by the teacher or person who is in charge.

Now connectivism is all about being able to use different types of technology in many different ways. In a classroom situation for example, some people believe that teachers or students should know everything. Well that is not the case, the important thing is that teachers and students know where to look and what to use to find information on topics that are unknown. Because we are becoming a very tech savvy world it is important that people are able to use technology to help them find answers. A wiki is a great way of understanding how to use technology to help you find answers to the questions you are unsure of. That is what I believe connectivism is all about.

Blog 1

Hey everyone, my name is Emily and I am currently in my third year of uni. I am studying a Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood). I am very passionate about creating a play based classroom. My ultimate teaching dream would be to teach in a Reggio Emilia classroom. I would love to teach kindergarten when I graduate as I believe those first years are some of the most important when it comes to the students educational journey. At the moment I have a broken wrist so it is quite difficult for me to use a laptop or computer, so my blog may not be as pretty looking as others but i hope you enjoy what I have to say on the coming topics :)

If you have not heard of the Reggio Emilia Approach I have added in a short youtube clip that will help you to understand what the Reggio Emilia Approach is about.

I have also added in a little poem that relates to the Reggio Emilia Approach. Hope you enjoy!
